Lessons I Learned From Learning A Language

Have you ever started to talk in another language to someone you know? They have to stop what they are doing and listen?  I wanted to share with you an experience that I had and it was very effective to get a person to calm down and pay attention to you.

Language Barrier

  1. When my children were small I thought it would be a great idea to learn sign language. It is a great language to know and the third most used in the United States. Did you know that?

I heard that when kids are young they tend to pick up on this language very fast. Have you seen little one use it before they even know who to speak? They teach it in preschool, so you can understand the little ones better.  I also seem to talk a lot with my hands, so I figured I could at least make sense and put my hands to good use. I learned to love the language and it was great exercise for my arms and hands.

  2. As my kids got older we used the language quite often. I remember when my son was in a very large gym at his school band concert. I was up on the bleachers and we carried on a conversation like we were sitting right next to each other.

My daughter and I have used it in places where we wanted our conversation to be private. Others just look at you going HUH???   Or, you can use it in really loud places when you need to know what the other person is asking you. Its great for it beats shouting at the top of your lungs.

  3. This is one of the best lessons that I can share with you today. I remember one day, things were just not going well. I was tired, my kids were cranky, and after the start of the screaming and crying session. I stopped, sat on the floor and started signing.

You want to know what happened?

They stopped…sat down with me and listened. We had a very quite conversation from then on, until we understood what the other one wanted. Things went a lot smoother for the rest of that day.

Forms of Languages

I want to share with you something else, that will make you stop and listen. Words can come to you in many forms and many languages that it is great to hear them when you need to.  When you started gaining friends from around the world, the world gets smaller and you feel bigger.  Stretch you language barrier and reach out!

If you need someone to make you stop in your tracks and really think about what you are doing. You do not want to miss out on a wonderful opportunity of freedom and happiness.   Start reading and listening more to others around you.
