Set Layers To NOT Be The Victim
Refuse to give in to what life throws at you. Stand strong and set layers to not be the victim whenever you can. Things I share are for personal safety.
Refuse To Be The Victim
I was cleaning out my files the other day and came across a workbook. It was one I picked up after I separated from my husband. It all ended well, but that is another story. Long story short, I felt vulnerable and wanted personal safety.
This was a great workbook and class that I took about 25 years ago, but it has stuck with me and I still do many of the things it talks about.
There are many out there that want to share with you how to be safe, some are good and some are bad. But, how to NOT be the victim is the real issue.
Not everyone is alike and not all solutions work for each of us. I am not here to tell you how to live your life or how to stay safe, that is totally in your control. I can give you pointers that helped me feel better so I can go on with my life.
Layers are like Boundaries
We are going to peel off the layers. Yes, like onions. In other words, we are going to set up our safe place in the world and move out from there.
The inside layer we want to keep the biggest boundary on. This is our home or place where we sleep. Hence, the most vulnerable because we can not be aware of our surroundings when our eyes are closed.
Around that we want to put things that deter others. This is where we can look at places of easy access. Then put something prickly or obstacle that they would think twice about crossing. Thorny bushes under windows are a good example.
Next in our layers are lights. Yes, making it bright! If someone doesn’t want to be seen they will not like to be in the light. Auto sensors are great for it will surprise and make the brain think otherwise. LED lights are great on electricity, and what is a little expense for your safety.
Last but biggest layer are locks. Metal is better than wood and dead bolts are better than just door locks. For instance, have you ever opened a door with a credit card?
Other ways to set Layers
There are many ways to set layers around you. It isn’t just your stuff. However, you need to remember what is important. That is you! The rest of the material things in life are just stuff and most can be replaced. You can not!
Having a furry friend around is more than just companionship. Dogs will bark when things don’t seem right. It is a great deterrent for someone coming into your domain.
One layer of importance is your keys. They are the entrance to what you hold dear. Keep them safe and secure. Remember who has your keys, has access to your layers.
Visitors are wonderful, you want them to come and enjoy your life. Yet, be on guard with ones you don’t know. Things of value are great to show off, but they also give an invite for ones that want to do you harm.
This last point is something a lot of people don’t think about. We all buy things online, but do we ship them to our home? Who else do you give your address to? That is just like giving them an invitation. I am not saying for you to stop ordering, I do it all the time. Just, be aware and know when things arrive.
Beyond Layers
Now that we have our home or sanctuary on guard, what happens when we are out and about? In other words, we have our lives in our cell phones, our cars, and our wallets.
Awareness is the key to security. Observe your surroundings and the people in your immediate vicinity. For instance, keep your items close to your body and know how close others are to you. Look them in the eye and acknowledge you know they are there. A shifty type character will turn and almost run for they have been identified.
Do you drive with your doors locked? Or leave your purse and checkbook in the car when you run into the store? Hence, think first and then react. Personal safety begins with you.
To NOT Be The Victim
If you travel a lot by yourself, my advice is to find a personal self-defense class. They will cover the best way for you as a person can stay safer and feel more confident.
There are many things that I would love to go over, but I wanted to share things with you to set layers to NOT be the victim.
Keep smiling
Sandy
