Sitting around doing nothing the other day gave me an idea. It is time to think outside the square and get moving. In other words, start a new project or skill.
How do you start something when you really have no idea what you are going to do? We need to open our minds and think. However, I believe you might have things you have been dying to do, just don’t know where to start!
Time for a New Project
I am starting to learn a new skill. I heard that it is good for the brain to give it exercise, so here it is. Thinking!
Learning something new takes effort. You need to learn techniques, terminology, and possibly new rules. What do you need to get through the door and start to get noticed?
Okay, maybe I am going too fast. Let’s start with the basics. That is always a good place to set your foundation.
Set Your Foundation Square
Setting your square will give you a starting point, or as I call it a foundation. It is good to know the topic, set a goal, and a why for your project. In other words, it is your base line of the skill you want to learn.
I remember when I started a blog so many years ago. I had to find things to write about, a topic list, an avatar of who I was talking to. It all came together after my diving in.
Now, I am learning to play the game of golf. Yes I am over 60 and just starting, but what a great sport to play when you are retired and need exercise.
Think of a Goal
Goals come in all shapes and sizes. Do your research and find a part where you might think it is impossible to achieve. That is your final goal, then we break it down to give us things to work on.
(I have a great goal setting guide to follow, click here)
Now is the time to commit. Time to start stepping out of your comfort zone and looking at what you are capable of doing. However, you might surprise yourself and want more.
Thinking of Expanding the Square
The only true way of learning something new is by expanding. Learning new things along the way. This can lead to many things and don’t be surprised by finding other skills along the way. That is how life works best.
One thing I am learning, (and need to remind myself all the time) is that there is always more to learn. I get caught up knowing enough to get me into trouble and then not knowing how to fix it. Think first and only give advice on what you know is best.
Keeping it Going
How you improve is the key to anything you do. If you want something to change and get better, I have three things that might help:
Show UP
Do the Work
Get advice
Showing up shows determination, even if that practice session didn’t go as planned, I was still committing myself to be there.
Doing the work is just what it says. If you don’t do the time you don’t get the rewards. If you expect others to do it for you, they advance and not you.
Getting advice is always needed. You might not always see what is not working and then wonder or practice it wrong constantly. Hence, having another set of eyes that can point things out is great. Be open to criticism and use it to improve.
When you start thinking outside the square, life happens, so get up and get going life is out there.
Sandy
P.S. I love my new skill and find ways to improve all the time.
