Most things in life give us a choice. Let’s start by looking at the difference between anger or a smile. In other words, how much better is life if you choose happiness vs your anger.
We can even take that up a notch and say that anger makes you stupid and a smile makes you smart. This is a subject that will take some thought and then things to act upon to see for yourself. Hence, let’s make a choice: anger or a smile.
Do You Choose Anger
Does anger come to you when it shouldn’t? I think that is a great question, but only if you know how to control the anger. I am not saying anger is bad, there are times when we need the adrenaline and the spark.
Anger is caused not only by what happens to us, but also by how we habitually think about these things. For example ….. If we work on changing the way we think about situations that anger us, we’ll find in time that anger no longer controls us.
Our brain is a great tool for us to use. Yet with it being so powerful, we can’t always comprehend how it works. Hence, let’s look at the triggers, tension levels, and other things that get us to understand it a little better.
Anger Or a Smile
Why do I say there is a choice? I was reading a study guide to help with a skill and this point was made. Anger makes you stupid and smiling makes you smart. It got me thinking and there has been lots of study on this subject. Here is an article I found.
It has been said that when you have negative emotions that lead to anger the brain releases cortisol, which blocks the full access to the higher brain functions. In other words, when you are mad you can’t think or function clearly.
On the other hand, when you have positive emotions that bring smiles, a hormone called DHEA is released. This acts as a lubricant in the brain to give easier access to higher functions. Hence, better decisions and thoughts to guide you through.
Triggers To Anger
All it really takes is 5 minutes to calm a battle. Sit still and close your eyes every time you feel that trigger, or the anger you don’t want. Talk to it, find out why it came and then have your brain search for an answer. This will help you start to win more of those so called silent battles, hence you will feel more alive again.
Do you know what a trigger is? A trigger is something that sets off the battle, for instance an action by someone else, or those little pet peeves that drive you mad. Here is a great read more on triggers.
Tension Can Create Anger
Tension can cause triggers also. I found some tips to help you recognize when you are stressed. Have a read…..and pay attention to your body, it will let you know.
- Observe your muscles and insides: Are your muscles tight or sore? Does your stomach feel in knots? Are your hands clenched?
- Observe your breath: is it shallow? Place your hands on your chest and notice when they go up and down. Did you forget to breathe?
Never knew this until I tried it. I was skipping a breath, and felt like I could do nothing right. Not necessarily angry, but frustrated which can cause the same symptoms.
Anger Is A Choice
Anger has been studied from the beginning of time. Aristotle discussed it at great length. Some will choose anger over passion, yet when we want to truly achieve something it is so much easier to choose a smile. Hence, access your higher brain cells with something positive and lose your negative thoughts for they lead down the wrong path.
Find your smile and think more positively and life will reward you.
